Mit 10 neuen Studio-Tracks, die in ihrer Heimatstadt Los Angeles aufgenommen wurden, begibt sich die Sängerin auf eine sehr persönliche Reise durch die goldenen Klänge ihrer Jugend mit einer Sammlung von makellosen Cover-Versionen. Durchdrungen vom Geist ihrer kalifornischen Erziehung ist das Album eine herzliche Hommage an die alte Popkultur, die ihre musikalische Identität geprägt hat.
»Once Upon A Time In California« beginnt mit einem mitreißenden Remake des für Dionne Warwick geschriebenen Bacharach & David-Juwels »Anyone Who Had A Heart«. Danach zollt Belinda zeitlosen Künstlern wie den Carpenters (»Superstar«), Gordon Lightfoot (»If You Could Read My Mind«) und Jim Croce (»Time In A Bottle«) ihren Respekt, sowie Songs für die Ewigkeit wie »The Air That I Breathe« (Albert Hammond), »Everybody's Talkin‘« (Harry Nilsson) und »Reflections Of My Life« (Marmalade). Das Ergebnis ist eine ganz andere Art von California Dreamin' für eine neue Generation.
Obwohl dies das erste Mal ist, dass alle zehn Titel auf einem Album erhältlich sind, waren drei der Titel - »Superstar«, »If You Could Read My Mind« und »Get Together« - bereits auf früheren Belinda-Carlisle-Sammlungen erhältlich.
