Mit der Veröffentlichung des semi-autobiografisch betitelten The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away hat William »Bootsy« Collins wieder einmal seine langjährigen Weggefährten, das P-Funk / Rubber Band-Kollektiv mit Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Phelps Collins und Godmoma, um sich geschart. Eine weitere Überraschung in diesem Ensemble sind die Synthie-Funker Midnight Star.
Es ist auch das erste Album, das ausschließlich von Bootsy Collins produziert wurde, mit Ausnahme des Stücks »Shine-O-Myte (Rag Popping)«, das in Zusammenarbeit mit George Clinton produziert (und auch geschrieben) wurde.
