Der Begriff »Britpop« wurde von der Zeitschrift »Select« im April 1993 geprägt, um eine neue Welle britischer Bands zu beschreiben, die eine Alternative zum US-Grunge darstellten. Die Vorreiter-Szene »Baggy« (ob der weiten Klamotten) hatte mit Bands wie The Stone Roses erstmalig die Indie-Szene in die Charts geführt.
