NUGGETS wurde ursprünglich im Oktober 1972 veröffentlicht und konzentrierte sich auf die erste Generation amerikanischer Psychedelic- und Garage-Rock-Bands. Sie förderte Dutzende von dreiminütigen Meisterwerken zutage, die einige Wochen lang hell leuchteten, bevor sie Mitte bis Ende der 1960er Jahre aus den Charts verschwanden. Die bahnbrechende Zusammenstellung definierte das Genre des Garagenrocks und trug dazu bei, den Aufstieg des Punkrocks ein paar Jahre später zu inspirieren.
Kaye stellte die 27 Titel des Doppelalbums unter der Aufsicht des Gründers von Elektra Records, Jac Holzman, zusammen. Beide waren an der Produktion der NUGGETS: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION beteiligt, die neue, von Kaye verfasste Linernotes und Künstlerbiografien enthält.
NUGGETS: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION erweitert das Original um 42 zusätzliche Tracks. Dazu gehören Songs, die in der Sammlung von 1972 nicht enthalten waren, sowie Titel, die Kaye für einen zweiten Band von NUGGETS ausgewählt hatte, der aber nie veröffentlicht wurde.
1973 hatte Kaye 28 Songs für einen möglichen NUGGETS-Nachfolger vorgesehen. Endlich wird seine Vision auf NUGGETS verwirklicht: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION. Die Songs füllen zwei LPs und enthalten Top-40-Hits wie "96 Tears" von ? & The Mysterians, "Do You Believe In Magic" von The Lovin' Spoonful, "7 And 7 Is" von Love, "Little Bit O' Soul" von The Music Explosion, "Little Girl" von Syndicate of Sound und "Laugh, Laugh" von Beau Brummels.
Die letzte LP der Sammlung (mit dem Titel ALSO DUG-ITS, ARTYFACTS FROM THE ORIGINAL NUGGETS) enthält 14 Songs, die aus dem Sammelband von 1972 stammen. Zu den Highlights gehören "I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time" von The Third Bardo, "The Spider And The Fly" von The Monocles, "99th Floor" von The Moving Sidewalks (mit dem späteren ZZ Top-Gitarristen Billy Gibbons) und "Crazy Like A Fox" von Link Cromwell, alias Lenny Kaye.
