Sam Cooke’s 4-Vinyl-Set ‚SAR Records Story‘ präsentiert Material, das der legendäre Soulsänger zwischen 1959 und 1965 für sein eigenes SAR-Label aufgenommen, und meist auch selbst produziert hat, darunter auch einige unveröffentlichte Demos.
Die ersten 2 Platten decken die religiöse Seite des Labels ab, mit einer Vielzahl von Stücken von Cookes ehemaliger Gruppe The Soul Stirrers und einer großzügigen Portion an Songs von R. H. Harris & His Gospel Paraders und den Womack Brothers. Auch die 2. Hälfte der 4-Vinyl Collection bewegt sich in Sam’s vom Gospel abgeleiteten Soul-Sound, jedoch mit weltlicher Ausrichtung, und Gastauftritten der zukünftigen Stars Bobby Womack, Billy Preston und Johnnie Taylor, sowie L. C. Cooke, Johnnie Morisette, den Simms Twins und Mel Carter. Sam Cooke’s »SAR Records Story« erlaubt einen großartigen Einblick in einen weniger bekannten Teil von Cookes Karriere, und ist vollgepackt mit oft zu wenig geschätzter Musik von Sam.
