»Palomino« nahmen die Treetop Flyers in Eigengregie in ihren Londoner Soup Studios auf. Während der Aufnahmen zeigte sich, dass die Band dadurch ein gewisses Selbstvertrauen und vor allem einen großen Zusammenhalt an den Tag legte, die diesem Album einen speziellen Sound verleihen.
Unbedarft probierten sie neue Instrumente, Pedals und Techniken aus und fanden so mehr oder weniger zu sich selbst. Gemischt wurde das Album von Jonathan Wilson, der nicht nur als Musiker für Furore sorgt, sondern auch bereits Alben von Father John Misty, Conor Oberst und Elvis Costello mischte.
Schlagzeuger Tomer Danan fasst den Prozess folgendermaßen zusammen: »It was important for us to free ourselves from some of the ideas we had about ourselves and maybe a bit of what people seemed to think about us from an outside perspective, which was largely based on one song, letting in more of our influences from 70's Nigerian psych rock/pop to jazz and a whole lot in between. How that all gets filtered through us as individuals and as a group is what you are hearing, and that's still changing all the time.«
