Die Staple Singers gehören zu den gefeierten und angesehenen Gruppen des Gospel der Nachkriegszeit. Ihre Musik ist genreüberschreitend, sodass sie in ihrer sechs Jahrzehnte langen Karriere in Gospel, Soul und R & B gleichermaßen erfolgreich waren.
Das Oberhaupt der Staples Familie, Roebuck »Pops« Staples, gründete die Gruppe 1948 mit seinen Kindern Cliotha, Pervis und Mavis in Chicago. 1952 unterschrieben sie ihren ersten Plattenvertrag mit United. Im darauffolgenden Jahrzehnt nahmen sie nach United für verschiedene andere Labels auf (Vee-Jay, Gospel, Riverside). Ihre Musik zeigte bereits eine bluesige Note , die sich deutlich vom Mainstream-Gospel dieser Zeit unterschied.
Neben den A- und B-Seiten, einschließlich einiger Songs von weniger bekannten Labels, enthält diese Sammlung alle Tracks von ihren Alben während dieser Ära - »Uncloudy Day«, »Will The Circle Be Unbroken«, »Swing Low«, »Gospel Program« und »Hammer & Nails«. Es ist eine wunderbare Einführung in die glanzvolle Karriere dieser Gruppe.
