»The Mystery of Life« wurde im März 1991 veröffentlicht und war Johnny Cashs sechstes und letztes Album von Mercury Records. Es enthält Songs von zeitgenössischen Album-Sessions sowie Cashs erste Mercury-Session 1986 für das Album »Johnny Cash is Coming to Town«.
Die Platte enthält Aufnahmen von zwei bereits mit ihm verbundenen Liedern aus seiner Zeit bei Sun und Columbia, »Hey Porter« und »Wanted Man«. »I'll Go Somewhere and Sing My Songs Again« nimmt Cash im Duett mit seinem langjährigen Mitarbeiter Tom T. Hall auf.
Die Neuauflage der LP, die zum allerersten Mal remastert wurde und die originalen Mercury-Masterbänder verwendet, ist auf 180 g Vinyl gepresst, um höchste Qualität und Klangtreue zu gewährleisten.
