Abgerundet wird das Spektakel durch zwei Platten mit Singles, darunter das frühe Meisterwerk »He's Frank« und Songs wie »Alphaville« und »Eine Symphonie des Grauens«, deren Titel ganz bandtypisch Werke der Regisseure Godard und Murnau zitieren.
Dass die Mitglieder aus einem kunststudentischen Umfeld stammten, zeigt sich auch im Bandnamen, der den französischen Maler und Bildhauer Yves Klein und dessen berühmte monochrome blaue Bilder aufgreift. Die außergewöhnliche Mischung aus New Wave und 60s-Beat, trockenem Gesang und rhythmischen Gitarrenparts, Pop- und Psychedelic-Elementen hatte einen prägenden Einfluss auf die englische Musikszene.
Namhafte Acts wie The Smiths, Morrissey, Marr, Blur, Belle and Sebastian und vor allem Franz Ferdinand ließen sich von The Monochrome Set inspirieren. Aufgrund ausbleibenden finanziellen Erfolgs löste sich die Band Mitte der Achtziger auf. Sie reformierte sich 1990 und ist – mit immer wieder neuen Alben wie aktuell »Maisieworld« – bis heute aktiv.
