Das Line-up von den 1966 gegründeten Sweeney’s Men bestand aus Andy Irvine, Johnny Moynihan und Terry Woods. Ihr Debüt-Album erschien 1968 auf Transatlantic Records und nannte sich »Sweeney’s Men«.
Andy Irvine verließ die Band im Mai 1968 – er widmete sich seiner Solo-Karriere und schloss sich später unter anderem den Bands Planxty und Patrick Street an – und wurde durch Henry McCullough (später Wings) ersetzt. So veröffentlichten Moynihan und Woods das zweite Album 1969 bei Transatlantic.
1969 löste sich die Band schließlich ganz auf. Moynihan ging ebenfalls zu Planxty, während Woods ein Mitglied von Steeleye Span, The Pogues und The Woods Band wurde.
