Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Lindi Ortega, Jamey Johnson) ist auch bei "Metamodern Sounds In Country Music" wieder als Produzent tätig. Das Album wurde komplett live in Cobbs LCS Studio in Nashville von Simpson und seiner Band eingespielt, nachdem sie gerade von einer zweimonatigen Tour durch Amerika zurückgekommen waren.
Wie gut die Musiker zusammen harmonieren, ist dabei deutlich zu hören - oder wie Simpson es selbst sagt: "4 guys, 4 days and 4 reels of tape". Der Albumtitel ist eine Art Verneigung vor Ray Charles - und der erste Track, "Turtles All The Way Down", eine Anspielung an den Erforscher psychedelischer Drogen, Rick Strassman.
Sturgill Simpsons eigene Worte zu "Metamodern Sounds In Country Music": "Unzählige weltliche Angebote - Religion, Drogen und mehr - behaupten alle die universelle Wahrheit zu sein. Aber meiner Erfahrung nach ist Liebe die einzige Sicherheit. Davon handelt dieses Album."
