Ryan Binghams Biografie liest sich recht düster: Von den Eltern vernachlässigt, die Schule abgebrochen, abgehauen, zeitweise obdachlos, zeitweise im Truck pennend, arbeitete er als Cowboy. Von einem Nachbarn und Trinkkumpan lernte er das Gitarrenspiel.

Das erste Stück, das er zupfen konnte, war angeblich der klassische Mariachi-Song »La Malaguena«. Am anderen Ende der Karriere liegen bislang vier grandiose Alben und jeweils ein Grammy, ein Golden Globe und ein Oscar für den Song »The Weary Kind« aus dem Soundtrack zum Film »Crazy Heart« (in dem Bingham selbst mitspielt).
