Rodney Crowell begann seine Karriere in Nashville. Bald lernte er Emmylou Harris kennen und spielte als Gitarrist in ihrer Band. 1977 fungierte er als Produzent für Rosanne Cash, der Tochter von Johnny Cash. Nach Abschluss ihres Albums »Right Or Wrong« heirateten die beiden.
Doch erst 1988 gelang Rodney Crowell mit dem Album »Diamonds and Dirt« selbst der Durchbruch, und er erhielt einen Grammy für den »Country-Song des Jahres«. 2014 erhielt er einen weiteren Grammy für das »Best Americana Album«, betitelt »Old Yellow Moon«, welches er gemeinsam mit Emmylou Harris aufnahm. »Close Ties« schreibt seine Geschichte als außergewöhnlicher Songwriter fort. Es enthält Duette mit Rosanne Cash & John Paul White sowie Sheryl Crow.
