In den frühen 80ern war Robert Cray die größte Offenbarung im Blues seit B. B. King. Mit seinem Debütalbum »Who's' Been Talkin'« und seinen Live-Auftritten in den USA und Europa erreichte er eine alte und junge Generation.
Im Jahr 1985 veröffentlichte er das Album »Showdown!« mit zwei seiner Helden: Albert Collins und Johnny Copeland. Robert Crays Kompositionen lieferten faszinierende Geschichten über Sex und Untreue mit diszipliniertem Gesang, Songwriting und einer Version von Blues und Soul, die nicht aus einer bestimmten Region stammt, und schufen ein Idiom für Songs, die mit gesprächiger Direktheit die Geschichten gewöhnlicher Menschen erzählen.
»Collected« ist ein Überblick über 40 Jahre Karriere, beginnend im Jahr 1980 mit einem großen Finale mit Gästen wie B. B. King, John Lee Hooker, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton und Joe Bonamassa.
