Obwohl er seit dem vierzehnten Lebensjahr eine Hörhilfe benötigte, wurde er ein musikalischer Superstar der 1950er Jahre. Sein leidenschaftlicher Gesangstil motivierte seine weiblichen Fans bei Konzerten zu wahren Schrei-Orgien.
Zwischen 1951 und 1959 schaffte er mit 21 Titeln den Sprung in die amerikanischen Pop- Charts. Auch als Duett-Partner von Doris Day und Frankie Laine war Johnnie Ray erfolgreich. Er spielte auch in drei Filmen mit bevor er 1990 starb.
Johnny Mathis kam 1935 in San Francisco / USA zur Welt. Schon mit 13 Jahren begann er eine Ausbildung zum Opernsänger. Acht Jahre später ging er nach New York um sich hier als Jazzsänger zu versuchen. Mitch Miller, der musikalische Direktor von Columbia Records, war es, der Mathis dazu brachte, Pop-Balladen zu singen.
Ab 1957 folgte Hit auf Hit und bis 1984 gelangen dem Crooner mit dem ausdruckvollen Tenor 44 Volltreffer in den amerikanischen Hitparaden. Sogar während der Zeit des Rock & Roll gelang es ihm, sich stets in den oberen Gefilden der Charts zu tummeln.
