Die Dokumentation »American Epic« der britischen Filmemacher Bernard MacMahon und Allison McGourty erzählt von den ersten »Field Recordings« der US-Geschichte, die die Musikgeschichte entscheidend geprägt haben.
Produziert wurde der Film von Robert Redford, T-Bone Burnett und Jack White, der Soundtrack erscheint bei Sony: die Collection-Box enthält 100 Songs, edel verpackt in einer Hardcover Box (21 x 21 cm) mit Taschen für 5 CDs sowie einem 100-Seiten Booklet. Archiv-Songs aus den 20s / 30s in umwerfender Audio-Restoration.
Beim »Field Recording« mit transportablen, auf Fahrzeugen montierten Phonographen durchquerten Scouts der Plattenfirmen das Land, um neue Talente zu entdecken und ihre Songs direkt vor Ort mitzuschneiden. An den entlegensten Ecken fanden sie Sänger und Sängerinnen oder bemerkenswerte Instrumentalisten, deren Songs sie verewigten. Manche von ihnen wurden Stars, anderen blieb der Durchbruch verwehrt, aber sie alle haben ihren Platz in der Musikhistorie sicher. Denn ohne ihre Aufnahmen wären der frühe Blues, Gospel oder Folk für immer in Vergessenheit geraten.
