The Muffins waren eine in Maryland ansässige Progressive-Rock / Avant-Jazz-Gruppe. Sie wurden Anfang der 1970er Jahre in Washington, DC gegründet und nahmen vier Alben auf, bevor sie sich 1981 auflösten. 1998 reformierte sich die Band und nahm weitere fünf Alben und eine DVD auf. The Muffins spielten 1979 mit Marion Brown im Symphony Space am Broadway in NYC und traten auch bei einer Reihe von Festivals auf, beginnend mit dem ZU Manifestival in New York City 1978, dem Villa Celimontana Festival in Rom im Jahr 2000, zwei Auftritten beim Progday 2001 und 2002, beim NEARfest 2005 und beim »Rock in Opposition«-Festival in Frankreich 2009.
The Muffins sind (größtenteils) eine Instrumentalband, die von Avantgarde-Jazz, Progressive Rock und der englischen Canterbury-Szene inspiriert und beeinflusst wurde. Im amerikanischen Rolling Stone wurden sie als die »spirituellen amerikanischen Cousins von Henry Cow und Soft Machine bezeichnet.
