Das erste Album von Davis in Zusammenarbeit mit Gil Evans, der die Platte arrangiert und dirigiert hat. Sie hören Davis als einzigen Solisten und statt der Trompete spielt er das Flügelhorn. Das Saxophon wurde durch sechzehn Holz- und Blechbläser ersetzt, was der Platte einen ungewöhnlichen Klang und ein ungewöhnliches Gefühl verleiht. Kurz nach dem Erfolg der Platte veröffentlichten Evans und Davis Porgy and Bess (1958) und Sketches of Spain (1959/60).
