Mehr noch als Hergest Ridge (vgl. mein Kommentar dazu) hat dieses Album von der Generalüberholung durch Oldfield profitiert. Ich meine, auch intime Kenner werden Details entdecken die auf der Originalaufnahme allenfalls zu vermuten waren - insbesondere die Bässe und niedrigen Frequenzen sind eine Überraschung. Subjektiv hat das Album sogar an Schwung gewonnen, insbesondere an den Kulminationspunkten: Dem Ende des ersten Teils, der Dudelsack-Sequenz im zweiten, und dem Abschluß "On Horseback". Die Bonustracks sind dahingegen zwar nett, aber doch nur Dreingaben - mit dem Hauptteil ist das Album rund und gut abgeschlossen.
Ich würde sogar soweit gehen zu behaupten daß Ommadawn schon von Anfang an hätte genau so klingen sollen, wären nicht Mikes Introvertiertheit und die Tücken der Technik im Wege gestanden (das Booklet gibt da ausführliche Informationen zur Entstehungsgeschichte). Bleibt zum Schluß eine spannende Frage: Wird Mike (nach vielen Abstechern und Versuchen) noch einmal ein so faszinierendes, eingängiges und zugleich wegweisendes Werk schaffen?
