Gayes Karriere begann in den frühen Sechzigern als romantischer Balladensänger für Motown. Bis 1977 brachte er 39 Top-40-Songs für das Label heraus, darunter viele Duette mit Mary Wells, Kim Weston und Tammi Terrell. Aber auch seine Alben heimsten viele hervorragende Charts-Platzierungen ein. Insbesondere das 1971 veröffentlichte Werk »What's Going On«, das als das berühmteste Soul-Album der Geschichte gilt, sowie »Let's Get It On« (1973), welches vom »Rolling Stone« auf Platz 164 der 500 besten Alben gewählt wurde.
