Sie waren die ersten: The Longest Johns, A-Cappella-Folkband aus Bristol, nahmen 2018 eine Version des Shantys »Wellerman« auf. Zwei Jahre später stellte der Postbote Nathan Evans ein Video bei TikTok ein, in dem er das Lied nachsang. Es löste einen weltweiten Shanty-Boom aus.
Auch die Erfinder dieses Erfolges, The Longest Johns, profitierten von dem Hype, ihre Version schaffte es Anfang 2021 ebenfalls in die Charts. Mit ihrem vierten Album »Smoke & Oakum«, dem ersten für ein Major-Label, zeigen sich The Longest Johns jetzt weiter gereift und in ansteckender Musizierlaune.
Zu hören sind sie nicht nur A-Cappella, sondern auch mit typischer Folk-Instrumentierung wie Gitarre, Banjo, Whistle und Harmonium. Und diesmal erklingen zusätzlich zu schmissigen Shantys auch historische Folk- und Work-Songs. Das macht Riesenspaß und lädt zum Mitsingen ein!
