Als Jazz- und Rhythm'n'Blues-Gitarrist, Komponist und Arrangeur war Kirkland schon seit Mitte der 1930er mit verschiedenen Ensembles aktiv, machte sich aber bald als Studiomusiker mit zeitgenössischen Stars wie Eddie Mack, Ella Fitzgerald, Big Maybelle oder Screamin' Jay Hawkins einen Namen. Songs wie »Good Lovin'«, »Open Up That Door«, »Stop The Wedding«, »Night Crawlin'« oder »You Made Me Love You« gehören zu seinen bekanntesten Kompositionen, über 700 Credits für Komposition und Arrangements hielt der Künstler, der immer wieder auch selbst zum Instrument griff.
Die 28 hier enthaltenen Songs von 1952 bis 1962 werden von Künstler*innen wie Clyde McPhatter, Dinah Washington, Sonny Terry, Dolores Ware, The Pearls, Jimmie Newsome, The Five Keys, Brook Benton und vielen Anderen vorgetragen.
