Mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod im Jahr 1949, ist der Einfluss des großen Blues- und Folk-Sängers Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) weiterhin präsent und spürbar. Tom Waits, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan und Jack White sind nur einige der Musiker, die stark von ihm beeinflusst wurden. Lead Belly galt als Lieblingssänger von Kurt Cobain, dem man nachsagt, er habe sogar einmal versucht Lead Bellys Cousin eine seiner 12-saitigen Gitarren abzukaufen. Viele seiner Songs, wie z. B. Goodnight Irene, The Rock Island Line, The Midnight Special oder Pick a Bale of Cotton sind längst zu echten Klassikern geworden.
