Gitarristin, Sängerin, Folkikone der 1960er-Jahre, Bürgerrechtlerin, Pazifistin – Joan Baez ist im Laufe ihrer beeindruckenden Karriere vieles gewesen. Im Januar 2016 feierte sie ihren 75. Geburtstag und lud zu diesem Zweck neben zahlreichen Fans auch einige musikalische Gäste ein. Den Mitschnitt dieses Abends gibt es jetzt mit »Joan Baez: 75th Birthday Celebration«.
Gemeinsam feierten Baez und ihre Musikerkollegen, darunter alte Wegbegleiter und neue Freunde, im Beacon Theater in New York eine große Party. Es wurde ein Folkfest, wie es im Buche steht, das komplett ohne den Einsatz von elektrischen Gitarren auskam.
Auf der Bühne standen neben Joan Baez noch andere Folklegenden wie David Crosby, Paul Simon, Judy Collins, die Indigo Girls und Richard Thompson. Außerdem gaben sich Country- und Westernstars wie David Bromberg, Mary Chapin Carpenter und Emmylou Harris die Ehre. Zu den weiteren Gästen gehörten Rockikone Jackson Browne, Singer-Songwriter Damien Rice, die Blues- und Soullegende Mavis Staples sowie der chilenische Sänger und Multiinstrumentalist Nano Stern.
Alleine oder im Duett mit ihren Gästen performte Joan Baez an diesem Abend insgesamt 21 Lieder, darunter eigene Kompositionen der Sängerin, alte Folksongs, Cover vieler Klassiker oder Songs der übrigen Künstler.
Für »Joan Baez: 75th Birthday Celebration« hat sie diese Lieder nun auf zwei CDs versammelt. Den Mitschnitt dieser legendären Geburtstagsfeier gibt es zudem auf DVD sowie im Set, bestehend aus der Doppel-CD und der DVD.
