»What Occurs« ist Islands zehntes Album. Aufgenommen, gemischt und gemastert wurde es komplett auf Vancouver Island, dem Geburtsort des Islands-Songwriters Nick Thorburn, auf dem auch seine erste Platte entstand.
Das Album funktioniert wie eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten, wobei jeder Song eine andere Geschichte erzählt: Ein Mann stiehlt das Gemälde eines Milliardärs (»David Geffens Jackson Pollock«), eine Frau hat panische Angst vor Intimität, kann aber hervorragend tanzen (»Arachnophobia«), und ein liebeskranker Verlierer macht alles falsch (»Drown A Fish«).
