Aufgenommen innerhalb von 48 hektischen Stunden mit dem langjährigen Produzenten Joe Boyd, ist »U« ein eklektischer Mix verschiedenster Stile, wie er auch in der gleichnamigen Bühnenshow der Band zum Tragen kommt. Die Show war kein kommerzieller Erfolg, obwohl die Mischung aus Spiritualismus und Mystizismus genau dem damaligen Zeitgeist entsprach.
