Mit 19 Jahren wurde er von seinem Vater aus dem Haus geworfen, weshalb er anschließend in seinem Auto, einem 1994er Toyota Corolla, lebte. Daraus entwickelte sich sein Künstlername Hobo Johnson, und auch der Titel seines 2015er Debütalbums ist seinem Auto gewidmet.
