Gordon Lightfoot war ein kanadischer Singer-Songwriter und Gitarrist, der mit Folk- und Country-Musik internationale Erfolge erzielte. Er gilt als Mitbegründer des Folk-Pop-Sounds der 60er und 70er Jahre und wird als Kanadas größter Songwriter bezeichnet.
Lightfoots Songs wurden von einigen der bekanntesten Künstler der Welt aufgenommen, und mehrere seiner Alben erreichten international Gold- und Mehrfach-Platinstatus. Mit den Hits "If You Could Read My Mind" (1970), "Sundown" (1974) und "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976), die alle in dieser mittelpreisigen Sammlung enthalten sind, erreichte er die Spitze der US Hot 100 Charts.
Robbie Robertson von der Band bezeichnete Lightfoot als "einen nationalen Schatz", und Bob Dylan, ebenfalls ein Lightfoot-Fan, nannte ihn einen seiner Lieblingssongwriter. Lightfoot ist Anfang des Jahres im Alter von 84 Jahren verstorben.
