Bei den Songs auf »Nothing New« handelt es sich um reduzierte Gesangs- und Klavierversionen von Songs seines Backkatalogs, die Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) zwischen 2005 und 2009 zusammen mit seinem Wiederentdecker, dem Produzenten Richard Russell aufgenommen hat.
Die Songs zu diesem Album wurden von Scott-Heron noch selbst ausgewählt, erst beim Zusammenstellen fiel Russel auf, dass jeder Song von einem anderen Album Scott-Herons stammt. »Nothing New« erschien zunächst als limitierte LP am Record Store Day 2014.
