Mit seiner Begleitband The Catholics veröffentlichte Frank Black alias Black Francis alias Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV zwischen 1998 und 2003 sechs Alben. Der Pixi-es-Sänger hatte nach dem vorläufigen Ende seiner Band drei Soloplatten aufgenommen. Während der Produktion zu »The Cult Of Ray« fand sich 1996 die Band zusammen, mit der Black die folgenden Jahre an einem eher rauen, ungehobelten Sound arbeiten sollte.
Die Sieben-CD-Box »The Complete Recordings« enthält neben den sechs Studio-alben die Bonus-CD »True Blue«, die aufgearbeitetes Material und Demos aus den Ses-sions zum 2002er-Album »Black Letter Days« enthält. Die Songs sind alle remastert, deren Reihenfolge ist allerdings etwas ungewöhnlich: Eine alphabetische Sortierung soll die über 100 Titel aus ihren jeweiligen Albumkontexten befreien und den Fokus auf das Gesamtwerk legen und »auf den Spaß, den wir damals hatten«.
