Donny Hathaways Schaffen umfasst gerade mal drei Jahre und fünf Platten. Der unter Depressionen leidende Komponist, Arrangeur und Sänger war ein Meister der zweiten Reihe. Er produzierte bei Curtis Mayfields Curtom-Label, schrieb Soundtracks, arbeitete mit King Curtis, Leroy Hutson und sogar Willie Nelson, landete ein paar mittlere Hits, klang wie die Schnittstelle aus Marvin Gaye und Stevie Wonder – verdammt gut also. Glücklich machte ihn das alles nicht; im Januar 1979 fand man den labilen Künstler tot vor seinem Hotel.
Mit nur einer Ausnahme besteht sein zweites Album aus Cover-Versionen, einer der pop-affinsten Künstler des Souls interpretiert zeitgenössische Hits wie »A Song For You«, »He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother« und (am wirkungsvollsten) »Put Your Hand In The Hand«, eine entspannte und doch treibende Gospelchor-Version des Songs, für den er geboren wurde. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Debütalbum ist Donny Hathaway eher düster, die meisten Songs sind langsame, vom Klavier begleitete Klagelieder, kraftvoll vorgetragen. Der Up-Tempo-Song »Magnificent Sanctuary Band« und das Gospel-Stück »Little Girl« mit großartigem Männerchor im Refrain setzen Kontrapunkte.
Bis heute lebt Donny Hathaway nicht nur in seinen oft gecoverten Songs weiter, sondern auch als große Inspiration für nachwachsende Generationen zwischen Soul und R&B.
