Arthel Lane Doc Watson ist als Amerikas-Folk-Gitarrist Nummer 1 bekannt. Im Jahr 1953 gründete Doc eine Honky Tonk Dance Band namens Jack Williams & His Country Gentlemen. Das Repertoire bestand hauptsächlich aus Rockabilly, Country- und Western-, Popstandards sowie aus Square Dance Nummern.
Entdeckt wurde Arthel Lane Doc Watson durch seine Begegnung mit dem Folkloristen Ralph Rinzler und dem Sammler und Diskographen Eugene Earle, die ihn auf ihrer Suche nach talentierten, traditionellen Künstlern in North Carolina trafen.
Nach Veröffentlichung der ersten Aufnahmen auf der Old Time Music bei Clarence Ashleys Vol. 1 (und später Vol. 2) Compilation auf Folkways Records, wuchs Docks Bekanntheitsgrad schnell und er machte sich einen Namen über die regionalen Grenzen hinaus. Als Höhepunkt seiner Karriere präsentierte Rinzler ihn schließlich dem ganz großen Publikum in New York.
