Von ihrem Debütalbum »Life, Love & Pain«, das 1986 erschien, hatten Club Nouveau vier aufeinanderfolgende Hits: »Jealousy« (im Wesentlichen ein Antwort-Song auf den Timex Social Club-Hit »Rumors«), »Situation #9«, »Lean on Me« und »Why You Treat Me So Bad«. Die beiden letztgenannten schafften es auf Platz 2 der Billboard R&B-Charts, wobei »Lean On Me« ein großer Billboard Hot 100-Hit wurde. »Jealousy« tauchte auch auf dem Soundtrack des Films »Modern Girls« auf. »Why You Treat Me So Bad« wurde vom Hip-Hop-Duo Luniz auf seiner Hit-Single »I Got 5 on It« und später vom Rapper und Plattenproduzenten Puff Daddy auf seiner Nummer-1-R&B-Single »Satisfy You« interpoliert.
