Die 1987 von Fruitbat und Jim Bob gegründete Band Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine eroberte die Szene mit ihrem unverwechselbaren Punk-Pop-Stil, der von Samples, Drumcomputern und sozialen Kommentaren durchsetzt ist. Nach ihrem Nr. 1-Album »1992 The Love Album«, das die Band zum Popstar machte, kehrten Carter USM mit »Post Historic Monsters« zurück.
Die Band entfernte sich von dem Sound, für den sie bekannt geworden war, und erforschte neue Musikstile, während Jim Bob begann, persönlichere Texte zu schreiben. Das Ergebnis wurde von den Kritikern gelobt, und das Album kletterte bis auf Platz 5 der britischen Albumcharts.
