Aufgenommen im historischen RCA Studio in Nashville beinhaltet By The Way, I Forgive You zehn neue Songs, allesamt geschrieben von Carlile und ihren Langzeit-Bandkollegen Tim und Phil Hanseroth.

Zusätzlich zu Carlile (Vocals, Gitarre, Piano), Tim Hanseroth (Vocals, Bass), Phil Hanseroth (Vocals, Gitarre), Cobb (Gitarre, Percussions) und Jennings (Piano, Orgel) featured das neue Album ebenfalls Chris Powell (Drums), Josh Neumann (Cello), John Mark Painter (Horn) sowie Streicherarrangements des späten Paul Buckmaster (Elton John, The Rolling Stones).
Seit Beginn ihrer Karriere veröffentlichte die Band sechs Alben, darunter das 2015er Werk The Firewatcher's Daughter, welches eine Grammy-Nominierung für das »Best Americana Album« einheimste.
