1969 traf Al Green den Produzenten des Labels Hi Records, Willie Mitchell. Mit ihm gemeinsam entstand Greens erster Nummer-Eins-Hit »Tired Of Being Alone«. In der Folge nahmen sie das Album »Gets Next To You« (1970) auf und erreichten in den USA Goldstatus. Das daraufhin veröffentlichte Album »Let’s Stay Together« von 1972 wurde ebenfalls ein großer Erfolg: der Titelsong erreichte die Top 10 der amerikanischen Charts. Noch im selben Jahr erschien das Album »I’m Still In Love With You«, gefolgt von »Call Me« in 1973. Al Green avancierte damit zum Superstar des Soul und R&B.
»The Very Best Of« gibt auf 2 CDs diese Periode der Zusammenarbeit mit Willie Mitchell und Hi-Records wieder, die für die Fans als seine produktivste Phase gilt. Al Green gilt neben Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, Barry White und Curtis Mayfield zu den größten Stimmen des Soul.
