Als »Gohan Ga Dekitayo« 1980 herauskam, war Akiko Yano mit dem Yellow Magic Orchestra auf Tournee. Sie spielte Keyboards an der Seite der drei Gründungsmitglieder Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto und Yukihiro Takahashi, plus Gitarrist Kenji Omura und Synth Wizard Programmierer Hideki Matsutake, und sie sind alle auf »Gohan Ga Dekitayo« anwesend. Das Album wurde von Ryuichi Sakamoto koproduziert. Es war Akikos erster Schritt hin zu einem volleren Synthesizer-Sound nach vier Studioalben, auf denen sie Pop und Jazz-Funk mischte. Die vierzehn Tracks auf »Gohan Ga Dekitayo« finden Akiko in Bestform, indem sie die Sensibilität ihrer Singer-Songwriterin mit dem Elektro-Pop-Sound von YMO mischt.
