1996 veröffentlichte Aaliyah ihr zweites Album, One In A Million. Die erste Single, "If Your Girl Only Knew", erhielt Doppelplatin und enthält Timbalands charakteristische synkopische Beats und Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliotts ergreifende Texte. "4 Page Letter" und "Hot Like Fire" wurden ebenfalls gut aufgenommen. "Ich liebe die Arbeit mit Timbaland", sagt Aaliyah. "Er versteht, was ich kann und will immer neue Dinge ausprobieren. Wir haben eine tolle Chemie, wir sind musikalische Seelenverwandte." Rashad schrieb das Videotreatment für "4 Page Letter" in zwei Stunden, während er an der Hofstra University studierte.
Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins, J. Dibbs, Daryl Simmons, Kay-Gee, Vincent "V.H." Herbert, und Craig King waren ebenfalls an der Produktion von One In A Million beteiligt. Das Album wurde mit Mehrfach-Platin ausgezeichnet und war ein internationaler Hit. Aaliyah trat in ganz Europa, Japan und Südafrika auf. In Tokio sangen die Konzertbesucher den Text all ihrer Lieder mit.
