Die Selfmade-Musikerin aus der 8000-Seelen-Kleinstadt Humboldt, Tennessee, frönt einem erstaunlich variablen Sound, inspiriert von Größen wie Leadbelly, Whitney Houston, Van Morrison, Woody Guthrie, Nico, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Elmore James und Blind Willie McTell.
Zusammen mit den Produzenten Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) und Kevin Augunas (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Florence & The Machine) hat Valerie June in den Easy Eye Studio von The Black Keys in Nashville eine aufregende, authentische Mixtur aus Blues, Folk, Gospel, Bluegrass und Soul erschaffen.
