Das britische Theater der 1950er Jahre war eine seltsame Harmonie der Gegensätze. Autoren vom Kaliber eines John Osborne und Harold Pinter brachten mit Stücken wie Osbornes Blick zurück im Zorn und Pinters The Birthday Party eine neue Ära des Realismus auf die Bühne, während gleichzeitig die sehr unterschiedlichen, aber gleichermaßen bemerkenswerten Talente der Newcomer Sandy Wilson und Julian Slade eine willkommene Fortsetzung der seit langem etablierten Tradition leichter englischer, schaumiger Musicalkomödien à la Novello und Coward boten, die sich auf Unterhaltung ohne jeglichen Versuch der Aufklärung konzentrierten.

Wilson und Slade waren mehr oder weniger Zeitgenossen, Wilson wurde 1924 und Slade 1930 geboren. Wilson besuchte Harrow und Oxford, während Slade dem hellblauen Weg nach Eton und Cambridge folgte. Beide sammelten ihre ersten Erfahrungen als Autor und Schauspieler an der Universität, Wilson schrieb für Revuen und trat darin auf, und Slade schrieb Musicals für Studenten und spielte in Shakespeare. Danach entwickelten sich ihre Karrieren in unterschiedliche Richtungen, doch in jedem Fall mündete ihre Entwicklung als Autoren schließlich darin, dass ihre Namen im West End als Autoren der Musical-Hits, die auf diesen Aufnahmen zu hören sind, in aller Munde waren.
