Das 1986 veröffentlichte Album 'So' avancierte zu einem jener Werke, die eine ganze Ära definieren, und wurde weltweit mit einer ganzen Reihe von Multiplatinauszeichnungen geehrt (allein in den USA wurden mehr als fünf Millionen Exemplare verkauft). Den Auftakt bildete damals die riesige Hitsingle 'Sledgehammer' und der dazugehörige, bahnbrechende Videoclip, der bis heute der von MTV am häufigsten gespielte überhaupt ist. 'So' enthält darüber hinaus weitere markante Hits, darunter 'In Your Eyes', das auch in Cameron Crowes Regiedebüt 'Teen Lover' eingesetzt wurde, sowie das zauberhafte Duett mit Kate Bush, 'Don't Give Up', und schließlich 'Big Time'.
An den Albumaufnahmen wirkten prominente Musiker mit wie Laurie Anderson, Stewart Copeland, Daniel Lanois, Jim Kerr, Bill Laswell und Nile Rodgers.
