"English Electric" ist das neue Album von Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD), dem gefeierten Synthpop-Duo aus Wirral, die ihrem Genre mit extrem experimentellen Alben wie "Architecture And Morality" (1981) und "Dazzle Ships" (1983) den Weg bereiteten. Hits wie "Enola Gay", "Maid Of Orleans" und "Souvenir" schickten sie in die Stratosphäre und formten dabei die Musiklandschaft der 80er mit. Sie waren auf dem Album zu John Hughes Kino-Hit "Pretty in Pink" vertreten, und die in nur einem Tag geschriebene Hitsingle "If You Leave" wurde ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Brat-Pack-Kanons.
Von Krautrock und Kraftwerk beeinflusst, unterschrieben sie 1979 bei Factory Records und ließen ihr legendäres Single- und Album-Artwork von Peter Saville entwerfen. Heute setzt ihre Arbeit Maßstäbe für Künstler wie The XX, La Roux, The Killers und Arcade Fire-Kollaborateur Owen Pallett, der "Dazzle Ships" mit nicht mehr als einer Violine überarbeitet hat.
