Unter dem Namen Nik Kershaw veröffentlichte er 1983 seine erste Single " Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". 1984 erschien mit Human Racing das Album, das sich wochenlang in Europa in den Top 10 hielt.
Im selben Jahr erreichte Kershaw mit "Wouldn't It Be Good" die Top 10 in den britischen und deutschen Charts. Weil dieses so erfolgreich war, veröffentlichte er noch im selben Jahr den Nachfolger "The Riddle" mit der gleichnamigen Single.
Von diesem Zeitpunkt an konnte man Nik Kershaw zu DEN Popstars der 80er Jahre zählen. 1985 spielte er auf dem von Bob Geldof initiierten Live-Aid-Konzert im Londoner Wembley-Stadion mit.
