Der Elektronikpionier Dieter Moebius (Kluster / Cluster, Harmonia) und der Produzent Conny Plank (NEU!, Kraftwerk, DAF) lernten sich bei der Arbeit an Clusters 71er-Album kennen, bis zu Planks Tod im Jahr 1987 verband sie eine enge Freundschaft. Musikalisch bildeten die beiden ein kongeniales Duo, was ihre beiden Alben "Rastakraut Pasta" (1980) und "Material" (1981) eindrücklich belegen. Auf "Rastakraut Pasta" bilden E-Gitarren, E-Bass und Schlagzeug die Basis aller Stücke; sie sind die Struktur, in die Moebius mit seinen Synthesizern zusätzliches Leben und Farbe bringt. Die Sounds der Keyboards ähneln sich häufig, dafür sorgte Plank mit der Studiotechnik. Keine Samples, alles streng analog. Holger Czukay (Can) spielt auf drei Stücken Bass und ist professionell genug, seine Virtuosität auf das Konzept von Moebius und Plank abzustimmen. Eine seltsame Sonderform von Popmusik entstand mit dem Album, eine halsbrecherische, elegante Mixtur unterschiedlichster Versatzstücke: ein wenig Krautrock, etwas Avantgarde-Pop, neudeutsche Elektronik und hier und da sogar Anklänge von Reggae.

Dieter Moebius (one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany, part of Harmonia and Cluster) and Conny Plank (the most legendary sound engineer of the German Underground) made a congenial pair as musicians. An enigmatic form of pop music came into being on "Rastakraut Pasta", a breakneck, elegant mix of diverse elements: a touch of Krautrock, some avant-garde pop, new German electronica, even sporadic echoes of reggae.
