Mary Wells, 1943 in Detroit geboren, hatte eigentlich den Plan, als Songwriterin hinter den Kulissen zu agieren. Stattdessen wurde sie Star eines der angesagtesten Labels und die erste „Queen of Motown“.
Ganz unglamourös fing ihre Karriere im Alter von 12 Jahren als Putzhilfe an. Später landete sie zahlreiche Top 10 Erfolge, bekam goldene Schallplatten mit Motown Music und nahm Platten mit Marvin Gaye auf. Zudem tourte sie mit den Beatles.
