MF Doom und Madlib sind Madvillain. Die beiden lernten sich 2002 kennen und begannen bald darauf mit der Arbeit an Madvillainy, das im Laufe des nächsten Jahres fertiggestellt und 2004 veröffentlicht werden sollte. Das Album ging allen gängigen Konventionen im zeitgenössischen Hip-Hop gegen den Strich: kurze Songs, dreckiger Sound, keine Refrains und mit lyrischen Themen, die nicht immer jedem beim ersten Hören klar waren. Das Album erhielt das höchste Kritikerlob eines im Jahr 2004 veröffentlichten Hip-Hop-Albums und sorgt auch Jahre später noch für Interesse und Kontroversen.
