Der Sommer kann kommen...

Los Straitjackets sind eine Band aus Nashville, die den instrumentalen Surfsound der 60er Jahre in die Jetztzeit transformiert. Pate für diese Frischzellenkur waren Leute wie The Ventures, der frühe Link Wray, Duane Eddy oder Dick Dale. Bei der Umsetzung legt die Gruppe eine Leichtigkeit und gleichzeitig Authentizität an den Tag, die sie locker über den Status einer nostalgischen Oldie-Band hebt. Ihnen steht dabei gut zu Gesicht, dass sie Wert darauf gelegt haben, die 13 neuen Eigenkompositionen teilweise rau und kantig klingen zu lassen. Als Kontrast dazu gibt es noch elegante, swingende Nummern. Das Ergebnis klingt wie ein Soundtrack zu einem Tarantino-Film. Die CD ist aber genauso als Berieselung für die nächste Garten- oder Strandparty geeignet. Der Sommer kann kommen...

Rückkehr der Maskierten

Nach längerer Pause besinnt sich die Band um ex Raybeats-Gitarristen Danny Amis auf ihre eigentliche Stärke und meldet sich mit einem wieder rein instrumentalen Album zurück, weniger herausragend als ihre ersten zwei, drei oder vier (umwerfend: die Weihnachtsplatte!) und außerdem arg kurz. Los Straitjackets bleiben ihrem Konzept treu, das da heißt ein Drittel Surf plus zwei Drittel Instrumental Rock'n Roll bei teilweise äußerst simplen musikalischen Strukturen, serviert mit einer guten Prise Humor. "Catalina", das eleganteste Stück, kommt mir wie eine Variation von Moon River vor - ein Titel, den LS übrigens tatsächlich gecovert haben. -- Wie immer ausgezeichnet gespielt und aufgenommen, aber angesichts hoher Erwartungen doch "nur" solide.
