Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – bestehend aus Cole, Blair Cowan, Lawrence Donegan, Neil Clark und Stephen Irvine - wurden 1982 in Glasgow gegründet, wo der in Buxton geborene Singer-Songwriter Cole Philosophie und Englisch an der University of Glasgow studierte.
Ihr Sound schwamm gegen den Strom glänzender Synthesizer der 80er Jahre und bot intensiven, melodischen, gitarrenbasierten Pop, gekrönt von skurrilen Texten voller literarischer Referenzen. Wenn man bedenkt, wie beliebt das Debüt-Album »Rattlesnakes« (#17 Deutsche Album-Charts) war, so schien es fast unmöglich, dass das darauffolgende Album genauso gut ankommt - doch »Easy Pieces« hatte sofort nach der Veröffentlichung einen unglaublich guten Start. In den ersten zwei Wochen wurden sogar doppelt so viele Exemplare verkauft wie von »Rattlesnakes«, was der Band im November 1985 eine Top-5-Platzierung in den Charts bescherte.
