„One of the sounds of 2012“ prophezeite Independent On Sunday vor einigen Wochen und bescheinigte damit schriftlich, was die Zuschauer der TV-Kultshow „Later… with Jools Holland“ schon wussten: Dass mit Lianne La Havas eine außergewöhnlich talentierte Sängerin die Bühne des Soul-Pop betreten hat, um deren Stimme und Songwriting im kommenden Jahr niemand herumkommen wird. Im Oktober 2011 debütierte die 22-Jährige in der Show des beliebtesten britischen Showmasters und trat mit zwei Songs eine Welle der Begeisterung los. Innerhalb von vier Stunden war ihre monatliche Show im Londoner Club The Social komplett ausverkauft, drei Monate im Voraus waren sämtliche Tickets für einen Auftritt im Londoner The Scala vergriffen und die Januar-Tour durch England war ebenfalls in Rekordzeit ausverkauft. Ein guter Start für eine Newcomerin, die im Dezember den Support Slot für die Ben Iver -US-Tour mit grandiosem Erfolg ausfüllte. Inzwischen wurde Lianne La Havas zudem in die Reihe der ausgewählten 15 Acts der BBC Sound-Of 2012 -Liste aufgenommen und gilt als einer der MTV’s Hot Tips für 2012. Am 13. Juli erscheint ihr Debüt-Album Is Your Love Big Enough? auch in Deutschland.
Auch bei uns wartet man ungeduldig auf die Musik der Halb-Griechin / Halb-Jamaikanerin aus England. Unter der Überschrift „ Wo bleibt das nächste große Musikding?“ beantwortete Zeit Online diese Frage gleich in der Einleitung: „Aufgehorcht! Von Skrillex, Birdy und Lianne La Havas könnte der Soundtrack zum Popjahr 2012 kommen,“ und stellt im Artikel fest: „Sie könnte Adele in ihrer Abwesenheit gefährlich werden!“ Auch der MusikExpress nahm Lianne La Havas in seine Hot List 2012 auf und verglich sie direkt mit Amy Winehouse, Feist, Tracey Horn und Billie Holiday. Nach zwei EPs, Lost In Sound und Forget , legt Lianne La Havas nun ihr Album-Debüt Is Your Love Big Enough? vor, das ihr den internationalen Durchbruch verschaffen wird.
Allein ihre Stimme und ihre Intonation lassen aufhorchen. Mit Recht wird Lianne La Havas häufig mit Künstlerinnen von Nina Simone bis Erykah Badou und Lauryn Hill verglichen, und doch besitzt sie eine eigene Dimension, die sie unvergleichbar macht.
Ihre Single No Room For Doubt , die sie mit dem australischen Songwriter Willy Mason aufnahm, zeigt, welche Intensität eine moderne Stimme wie ihre dem klassischen Soul-Songwriting entlocken kann.

Since her appearance on the BBC’s Later ... with Jools Holland last fall, the excitement around Lianne has quickly spread across the UK, Europe and the US. Appearing on that same episode of Later … was Bon Iver, which quickly led to an offer for Lianne to open their December North American tour. “As soon as we saw her play it was so refreshing; somebody who could play their instrument, somebody who could use their voice, but in their own way. She is just fantastic,” Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon told Esquire (UK).
La Havas says that Is Your Love Big Enough? "acts almost like a map of the route I have taken through life, through love, in the past three years. The title is a question that mixes challenge, defiance, impatience, determination, pride, and, above all, passion. It demands an answer."
La Havas recently was nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2012 honor and was chosen as one of MTV’s Hot Tips for 2012. A native of South London, with Greek and Jamaican parents, La Havas began teaching herself to play piano, write songs, and sing at the age of seven. Her family’s diverse taste was very influential, as she told Time Out London, when she was a child, her grandparents babysat her often: “They’re from Jamaica, so when I was growing up I listened to a lot of religious reggae—almost hymns, but in a reggae style—on cassettes. But at the same time my mother was listening to a lot of ‘80s and ‘90s Michael Jackson, and Mary J Blige, who I loved from a very early age. Plus India. Arie, Jill Scott, and The Fugees. I saw my father often, and he played the accordion, piano, and guitar.” La Havas began singing backup for other musicians while attending art college for a year before deciding to focus on her own career as a solo artist and songwriter.
