Dann wurde Johnny von Mitch Miller für Columbia unter Vertrag genommen. 1958 nahm er ein Angebot von Johnny Cash an, in dessen Show als Ansager und Sänger aufzutreten. Beim Columbia-Label wurden Cash und Johnny Western vom berühmten Don Law produziert, und Johnny war ferner zwischen August 1959 und April 1963 als Musiker an vielen Johnny Cash Aufnahmen beteiligt.
